Three principles (or doshas) known as Vata, Pitta and Kapha all work together to achieve this balance:

Vata

The subtle energy associated with movement, composed of space and air. Vata governs breathing, blinking, muscle and tissue movement, as well as the pulsation of the heart. If in balance, this promotes creativity and flexibility. 

Pitta

Made up of fire and water, Pitta is responsible for the body’s metabolic and digestive system, as well as absorption, assimilation, nutrition and body temperature. When in balance, pitta promotes understanding and intelligence.

Kapha

This is the energy that forms the structure of the body, i.e. the bones, muscles and tendons. Kapha is essentially responsible for what holds the body’s cells together. Formed by Earth and Water, Kapha supplies the water needed for all of the body’s parts and systems. When in balance, this is expressed as love, calmness and forgiveness. 

These three principles work in harmony to achieve the balancing of energy within the body, which in Ayurveda is crucial to achieving optimum health and keeping disease at bay.
