Know Your Fertility Status

0

In the past 40 years, the sperm count of a healthy Male has halved, i.e. reduced by 50% and there has been a decline even in the sperm quality. This alarming rate of increase in Male Fertility can be attributed to many factors like smoking, exposure to hazardous chemicals in food, smoking, lack of exercise and unnecessary exposure to mobile phone radiation. As of today, Men contribute exclusively to 40% of Infertility cases. Hence Men and Women are equal contributors to the cause. However due to the social construct of our society, women are blamed and dragged for Infertility Treatment, without even getting their Male Partner’s tested first.

The problem of ignoring Men from the treatment scenario is not only rooted in rural India, where infertility is a taboo associated with the women primarily. The same problem can be seen even in the urban population due to variety of factors like lack of time for testing and being embarrassed about the situation.

Infertility Specialist’s in India are mostly females, as they are Gynaecologist’s who specialize in the subject. This is one of the major reasons why men shy away from speaking openly about their sexual health.

What men need to understand is that they need not indulge in awkward consultations with doctor’s right away. All they need to do is get themselves tested. Semen Analysis is routinely performed in many lab’s in the city. It’s a quick, non invasive and affordable test. However a word of advice to the gentleman community is to get themselves tested from labs associated with Fertility Clinics. Because such labs are usually operated by Embryologist’s and they are more experienced in assessment of fertility Potential of the sperm.

General instruction for Semen Analysis is to maintain a 2 to 3 days abstinence before getting tested. You can also collect the sample at home and produce it to a lab within 30 minutes of collection.
