Read This Before You Try the Soup Diet

The soup diet is a collection of weight-loss eating plans that claim to offer substantial results in a short period. Some of these diets require you to eat only soup whereas others set soup as the foundation of your diet and prescribe additional foods. The diet period lasts 5–10 days.

Benefits of Soup Diets

Soups diets are not new. In the 80s, the cabbage soup diet become the first popular soup diet. The idea was simple: lose 10 pounds by eating a specific cabbage soup for seven days. The evidence that eating soup makes you eat less (and therefore lose weight) is primarily anecdotal. In other words, some people achieve noteworthy results but many dietitians don’t recommend it. Clear broth serves as the base for soup diets. The broth can come from beef stock, vegetable stock, or chicken stock. Low-carb soup diets include veggies (such as turnips and collard greens) that have a lower glycemic index. Nearly all soup diets prohibit dairy, sweet treats, and processed foods.

Even though a tasty bowl of veggie soup infuses any meal plan with health benefits, it cannot serve as a replacement for entire food groups. For that reason, dietitians don’t recommend the soup diet or similar diets.
