Tips to Helping Calm Sciatica Back Pain

0

Sciatica back pain can be excruciating and even debilitating to your life. So, how can you calm the pain?

What is Sciatica Back Pain?

What exactly is sciatica back pain? Well, this is pain that occurs along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back down through the legs. It is actually very common and can start from something as simple as sneezing causing a tweak in your back or even from an injury. Pain typically starts at the spine (due to pressure on the nerve) and impacts one side of the body. When experiencing this, you should meet with a sciatica specialist in Scottsdale to know how severe the condition is and to receive proper treatment.

Tips to Calm the Pain

Exercises, stretches, and physical therapy can all find you relief from sciatica back pain. Self-care is the most important thing to remember when finding relief from sciatica pain, along with taking medication when needed.

Start by using ice packs to reduce inflammation and dull the pain. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications can also help you relax and relieve the pain.

Make it a habit to participate in physical exercise for about 20 to 30 minutes for 5 days a week. Swimming can be a very soothing option.

Stretches That Help

Stretches not only improve flexibility but can also help with sciatica pain. Nebu from ExpectNothing.com has suffered from sciatica pain in the past but has been able to find relief by practicing these stretches.

Pigeon pose

The pigeon pose is a very popular yoga pose that opens up your hips. There are various versions of this stretch, which are all beneficial. Just listen to your body and do what feels best.

Start by laying on your back and put your right leg at your right angle and lock fingers behind the thigh. Lift the leg and place the right ankle at the top of the left knee and hold the stretch. Do this on both sides, to help relieve the pressure.

Knee to the opposite shoulder

To loosen muscles and help with the pain, do the knee to opposite shoulder stretch.

Lie on your back with legs extended, and then bend your right knee and clasp hands around the knee. Gently pull your leg across the body to the opposite shoulder and hold for 30 seconds. Do this stretch 3 times each week.

Lumbar flexion stretch

For a gentle stretch to help with tension on the lower back, do the lumbar flexion stretch.

Lie on your back with both of your knees bent and slowly bring them toward your chest, while grasping underneath your knees. This helps open the holes on the side of your spine. Gently pull your knees to stretch your lower back and hold for a couple of seconds. Do this stretch about 10 times.
