5 Tips to Achieving a Healthy Diet

0

The key to a healthy diet is at your fingertips.  With so many food apps, delivery services, online recipes, calorie counters and other useful tips available online, you have access to a world of information.  The key to achieving a healthy lifestyle is making sure you’re getting a balanced diet and that your body is receiving the nutrients that it needs.

As a general rule, men should consume around 2,500 calories a day while women should have around 2,000 calories a day.  Here are five additional tips to achieving a healthy diet.

More fiber, less carbs

Carbs equal sugar and too much sugar is bad.  White bread, potatoes, rice, and pasta should be only eaten occasionally, and instead replaced with high fiber foods like whole wheat, lean meats, and other foods. A diet full of fiber can also make you feel fuller, making it less tempting to eat more.

5 servings of fruits and vegetables

Just like your parents taught you when you were a child, it’s suggested you eat 5 servings of fruits and vegetables per day.  They can be found in a variety of foods like green, leafy vegetables, apples, grapefruit, squash, avocados, etc. You can add a banana to your oatmeal in the morning or make a smoothie to get the fruits and vegetables that you need.

Cut out fats

While it might be tempting to reach for that bag of potato chips, it’s not going to do anything for your waistline, or more importantly, your health. Calgary’s Ali Ghani is someone who values a healthy lifestyle.  As such he makes sure to cut out saturated fats and choose better options.

Less salt

Eating salt or foods filled with sodium can lead to high pressure, which can lead to heart disease or stroke. Unfortunately, a lot of the food you eat already contains too much salt, so use food labels to help you cut back.  Look for less than 1.5grams of salt in everything you eat.

Exercise

It goes without saying that you can’t lose weight and lead a healthy lifestyle if you don’t add some form of physical exercise to your daily routine. Get outside for a walk at least 30 minutes per day.  Once you do that, try adding weightlifting and other strength building exercises to your regime.  By following these guidelines like Calgary’s Ali Ghani, you can improve your overall health and lead a happier, healthier lifestyle.
