Communicating Your Fitness Plan with Your Personal Trainer

Are you on a fitness quest because you are sick of being overweight, flabby, and just generally lacking energy? Whatever your reason for getting fit, you’ve hired a personal trainer and now it’s time to get started. You’ve taken the first step so you are on the path to reaching your goals. Some may think that putting all of their needs into the hands of a personal trainer is how you get fit, but having an open dialogue is a key to success.

First and foremost, you should do your homework so you end up with a trainer that meshes well with you. You want to know that they have a solid background and that they come to you through a reputable place. If you are hiring your trainer through an established gym, chances are you’re fine there. If however you are hiring a personal trainer that works on their own, you may want to ask them about their background up front so there are no surprises along the way.

Understanding your fitness level is a key element of getting in shape. This should be a conversation that you have with your trainer before any work out is underway. You need to be honest about your fitness level, how frequently you work out or intend to, and any obstacles that you may be presented with. This is an excellent time to convey to your trainer any injuries you have. For me, I have shin splints and though I don’t let them hold me back, I am certainly aware of my restrictions, so I use compression sleeves like these. Communicating your level and any injuries can prevent problems later on.

Talk to your trainer to understand what your work out will be. It’s important to understand how much cardio and resistance training they plan to put you through. Depending on how often you are meeting with your trainer, they will likely want you to maintain additional work outs throughout the week when you’re not meeting with them. They are the professional and they can make suggestions to create a workout that is tailored to you.

Establish your goals up front, and communicate them to your trainer. If they don’t understand that you are at your goal weight and want to use these workouts as a way of getting more toned, then they can’t lead you there. You have to be open and honest about what you hope to gain by using their services. They can’t tailor a workout to you if they don’t understand where you hope to be at the end of this. Be realistic about your expectations, however. Personal trainers are not necessarily dieticians, though most will recognize that you need to watch your carbohydrates and choose snacks like these that are low carb.

Tell them if you are struggling. When you’ve hired a trainer and are working hard to reach your goals, this is not a time to be tough. Sure you will have to push yourself, but if you are having trouble with some of the exercise or something is causing you pain or discomfort, then you need to be honest in your communication. The trainer may never know and you will suffer or ultimately injure yourself if you aren’t forthcoming.

Hiring a personal trainer is an excellent way to reach your fitness goals. A trainer can offer expertise and work with you to really get you to where you want to be. Having a very open and honest communication with your trainer is the most important step in being successful in your fitness regimen.
