Expect This After a Sinus Surgery

0

Perhaps you require a dental implant procedure, and you don’t have adequate room in your jaw to support the implants; an Encino sinus lift specialist at Sargon Dental can help you. This is through oral surgery that can add some bone to your upper jaw. If you had an extraction or are suffering from tooth decay, the thin layer of bone left behind cannot support dental implants.

Although a bone graft can create new bone, a sinus lift is necessary to create enough space for the implants. However, before you go for the procedure, you better be ready for the following after the procedure.

The Procedure

A sinus lift is performed on-site as an outpatient procedure meaning you don’t have to worry about hospital recovery time. On your appointment day, your provider applies sedation dentistry to ensure that you are comfortable throughout the procedure. Typical anesthesia is used, and once it sets in, your provider is ready to go. At first, the membrane is lifted upwards to create space for the bone grafting material. After enough space is made, the bone graft is carefully implanted into place. It is then covered in a membrane to lower the risks of infections. The entire procedure can take around 90-120 minutes.

You Can Experience Grogginess

During the procedure, you are put under anesthesia, and the effects caused will not wear off right after you are done. From the time you wake up from the surgery chair, walk from the hospital, ride home, and until you make it to bed and sleep, all of this will be blurred memories. That is why it is crucial to arrange for someone to take you home after your procedure.

Throat Pain and Killer Headache are a Possibility

Sinuses are hollow spaces behind your cheeks and above the teeth in your upper jaw. Since the sinus lift involves digging around this space, you will feel effects such as intense headache and throat pain. Note that although you are put under anesthesia, you can become aware of such developments soon as you open your eyes. However, there is no need to worry as necessary painkillers are prescribed to care for the pain and discomfort.

Recovery

As noted above, the sinus lift is an outdoor procedure meaning that your provider will send you home after the process. However, you will be given a list of instructions to help you recover quickly. In a few weeks or months, your mouth will generate new bone tissues.

Some of the instructions you take home can be restricting some of your daily activities and can include the following:

  • Not blowing your nose for at least four weeks.
  • Not drinking through straws.
  • Biting and chewing carefully to avoid contacting the wound
  • Avoiding rinsing and spitting
  • Not getting involved in activities that can put pressure on the sinuses.

Be sure to follow your dentist’s instructions accurately to ensure that you recover correctly and fast enough to get back to your everyday life.
