Ways to Recover the Addicts

Addiction and Why It Is Bad:

Addiction has crippled society since time immemorial, but now more than ever. It is a deeply rooted psychological disorder that can lead to death even if not controlled in time. 11.8 million people die annually directly or indirectly from drug or alcohol abuse-related complications. However, you need to remember that it is, in fact, a curable disorder. It can take a lot of time and supervision, but years of scientific research has gone into the process known as recovery. We will now discuss How do addicts recover  California and other places where it is rampant.

How to Recover an Addict:

The first basic things to be kept in mind are:

  1. Supervision and treating withdrawal – The first step is to rehabilitate the person and introduce them to a world beyond their addiction. The very next and most important step is to prevent or fight withdrawal. These can be various emotional and physical problems like restlessness, sleeplessness, inability to control emotions, depression, etc. These are all temporary and can be cured quite easily.
  2. Continuing treatment – A person’s addiction may not be fully cured even when it appears to be. This is why continuing treatment, even beyond what may seem necessary at first glance, is important. It is a psychological issue that is so embedded into the brain that it takes time to overcome.
  3. Preventing or countering relapse – Relapsing does not mean that the treatment has failed. It simply means that it is a setback that can be minor if addressed in time. In order to prevent this, triggers relating to the addiction, which are different for every person, must be identified and avoided at all costs. Patients should also be taught ways of dealing with them in their recovery program.

The Psychological Aspect:

Following directly from the last point, many cognitive therapy methods can treat addiction and prevent relapsing or adverse effects of withdrawal. Family therapy and motivational therapy are two big ones in this regard. The highly effective Twelve-Step Facilitation (TSF) is an individual therapy method designed to help people recover 12 steps of acceptance, surrender, and active involvement. This particular method has been proven highly effective and has a high success rate when done by trained and reliable professionals.

Medication:

There is a lot of medicine, both prescription and over the counter, but mostly the former, available in order to fight addiction and withdrawal. They are sometimes opioids like methadone, buprenorphine, lofexidine, or nicotine-based substances like patches, gums, bupropion, varenicline, etc. Some are also alcohol-based, like naltrexone, disulfiram, acamprosate, etc. All of these have been scientifically proven to be highly effective in treating addiction and mostly withdrawal. However, it should be kept in mind that all of these very potent and strong drugs should only be used on the advice and under the supervision of a doctor.

In Conclusion:

It is very important to understand and empathize with an addict and realize that recovery is very much possible and is a scientific process. The involvement of friends and family is also pivotal as far as how do addicts recover in California and such places are concerned. Unless there is a proper support system for addicts, recovery and good health can be difficult.
